[New!]Fire chief didn't expect volunteer job to become a lifelong career After 25 years, he's risen through the ranks BY SARAH HARDEE

BOONE COUNTY - In 1981, at the age of 16, Mike Giordano followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Point Pleasant Fire District. At the time, he wasn't aware it was the beginning of a lifelong career.

Over the past 25 years, he rose up the ranks from cadet volunteer to chief.

"I've served in all the ranks here," said Giordano, 41. "It's the only department I've ever worked for."

Giordano was one of the first full-time firefighters hired when the district went from all-volunteer to career in 1989. He was named chief in 1995.

The district, which covers an approximately 7-square-mile area of unincorporated Boone County, is mostly inhabited by businesses.

"The first question I'm usually asked by people is: 'Where is Point Pleasant?'" Giordano said. "We don't have many residential areas, so people don't know much about us."

The area is bordered by Erlanger, Florence and Hebron. Giordano said all the local fire departments work together with automatic aid agreements to provide the best service to the area.

"Automatic aid agreements are an excellent facet of fire service today," he said. "We all have a great working relationship, and our customers benefit."

Giordano lives in Hebron. He has two daughters.

The most rewarding part of being a fire chief is watching members of the department advance through career stages, he said.

"I get to see the young guys come in and develop into future leaders," he said. "I've also had the opportunity to watch the department grow. ... I have about the best job anyone could ask for."
