Flashover Training SimulatorMeet Your First Flashover in a Safe, Controlled Environment
In July 2001 the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that the Point Pleasant Fire Protection District would receive a training grant of $53,275 as part of the $100 million Assistance to Firefighters Program administered by the U.S. Fire Administration. This money, as outlined in the grant application, was used for the purchase of a flashover simulator. This simulator is used to train firefighters how to stay safe in the face of a flashover. A flashover – that moment when everything in a room ignites simultaneously – is among the most deadly situations that firefighters encounter, and also one of the toughest to train for. The Point Pleasant Fire Protection District is proud to offer the Flashover Training Class to fire departments throughout the community. This course is designed to give the student the skills and knowledge to recognize and understand the flashover stage of a fire. The primary focus of the course is to give the student a thorough knowledge of flashover and pre-flashover conditions. The course will teach the student how to deal with these conditions in a safe and productive manner. The ultimate outcome is to equip firefighters with the skills required to preserve life and property while protecting themselves. With improved technology and equipment, firefighters are arriving on the scene quicker. The result is that we are reaching the scene before any flashover occurs. A firefighter’s chance for exposure to this stage of fire has greatly increased. Given the fact that firefighter’s personal protective equipment (PPE) cannot the elements of a flashover, it is imperative that firefighters, under safe conditions, are taught how to identify and deal with this deadly stage of fire.
